The Bible for the Unchurched by Barry DuPont

The bible is a book written many years ago over a period of about 1500 years. The last books were written just before AD 70. The last books are called the New Testament.

When we read the New Testament we are reading about a changeover that was then taking place between an old system and a new systemWe are not in that changeover now, it was completed!

The old system was built around Adam who is described as a "natural man". The new system that was coming in is built upon Christ who is described as a "spiritual man" the "son of God" as he came from heaven.

What happened is that Adam began to think in terms of his own abilities to have a relationship with God. This is called the carnal mind. Adam's abilities from this "independent" way of thinking were limited to physical things. Latter a special group of people called Israelites building upon this type of thinking to build structures, to house God. They had rules to follow to keep the relationship going. This was called "the law".

Jesus Christ the son of God came from heaven to end this system that was based on Adam and his thinking. So Jesus completed all the requirements that this system held. This opened up an understanding that God is love and that our relationship is not based on any independent abilities that we have. This is the "mind of Christ".

This revelation of love in human history ended the old system because a knew understanding had entered into the picture. One that was not previously known. God's love is without condition and we do not have power over it. It is the idea of having power over God's love that is "carnal thinking".

So there is nothing that we can do or not do which will change the relationship of God's love for us. In this way we stop trying to make the relationship work and just realize that making the most of the relationship is the only viable approach. This thinking becomes part of our approach about life as Love is seen as truth or reality of life itself.
Independence is an illusion.

This revelation of love in human history ended the old system because a new understanding had entered into the picture. One that was not previously known. God's love is without condition and we do not have power over it. It is the idea of having power over God's love that is "carnal thinking" and is the basis of many ideas about man climbing up to God. Rather it is God that made known his love for us, his "offspring".

So there is nothing that we can do or not do which will change the relationship of God's love for us. In this way we stop trying to make the relationship work and just realize that making the most of the relationship is the only viable approach. This thinking becomes part of our approach about life as Love is seen as truth or reality.

When people think about the relationship as things that one can and cannot get away with then relationship it is not founded in the concept of love being the meaning of life.

When people know that "getting away" with something or doing something "good" makes no difference one way or the other to maintaining the relationship, then the relationship itself can become the meaning of life. And love can be seen as the structure of that relationship!

It is a different way of seeing things. Independence is an illusion. Relationship is our true treasure. God loves us. We do well to grow in this love consciousness.
